Article Examples (Part 14 of a multi-part article)
The quickest way to get a reputation as the smartest person in the room is to write magazine articles in your specialty and to distribute re-prints. The following are examples of some of my topics for articles:
Power Quality Services Articles
A “hot topic”, not long ago, was power quality. Basically, on a three-phase power system, each of the phases are separated 120 degrees from each other, which causes cancelation and results in very little neutral current. However, for computer loads, a “third harmonic current” can occur, causing the neutral current to exceed the phase currents. I did some studying, took measurements, wrote a white paper and an article and again, was considered an “expert” and did quite a few power quality studies, and most included preparation of 1-line diagrams on an hourly basis. Again, no competition, well paid.
Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) Articles
A UPS is a device consisting of a battery and an inverter to provide AC power to a load without interruption if commercial power fails. You can buy a small UPS at your local electronics store. You don’t need an engineer to design the installation, just plug your computer into it, and no information is lost during a blackout.
However, systems for computer rooms are huge and complex and require engineering, including paralleling of units, backup generators, bypass for uninterrupted maintenance, and complicated cooling. After a large installation, I wrote a white paper followed a magazine article titled, “UPS Installation at Bank Data Center is expandable to 5 Megawatts.” I was then considered the data center/UPS expert.
A few years later, a US manufacturer of small UPS units bought a Danish company that manufactured large units. They had the technical manuals and catalogs converted to English, but they were concerned because the result was what they called “Danglish.” I wasn’t sure what they wanted from me, but when they called, I went to meet with them. Two young guys met me in the reception area and took me to the cafeteria to discuss it over coffee. While I was giving my usual “spiel” to the 30-year-old manager, his 25-year-old assistant was thumbing through my brochure. First, the assistant interrupted to say, “There is an article here that he wrote about ‘Power Quality.’” Next, he said, “He also wrote an article about a UPS System that he designed.”
At this point, the manager held up his hand to stop me from talking and said, “We have done a nationwide search, and yours is the only name that has come up more than once. We don’t know what you are going to charge, but you’re the guy we want.”
This was a very unusual assignment; it was not an engineering design. I gave them two proposals:
The first proposal was to rewrite the “text” of the catalog, rewrite the “white papers,” and explain how to reorganize the catalog to be more user friendly for consulting engineers. I was also specific on the number of review meetings.
The second proposal (which they hadn’t asked for) was for me to be available for “telephone consultations” for up to 8 hours per month for a monthly fee. This was a whole new area of business for them, and they were not used to marketing their product to consulting engineers and to data center managers. I didn’t work for cheap, but I restrained myself from overcharging.
They accepted both proposals. After three months with no telephone consultations, I started to spend a few hours each month reviewing catalog material of their competitors and industry magazines. I sent them e-mails with suggestions for new related products and services. They were happy with the catalog work and continued my monthly fee for over a year. They also became a client for numerous UPS and data center designs as well as some upgrades at their various manufacturing facilities.
Arc Flash Calculations Articles
More recently, another “hot topic” called “arc flash” became a concern. Since the days of Thomas Edison, the largest electrical concern has been “short-circuits”: the high inrush of current when two opposite polarity electrical wires touch. A newer concern is “arc flash”: the heat and flash associated with the same event. (Google “arc flash” for some gruesome videos.)
I, again, became considered an “expert” and did quite many arc flash studies, and most included preparation of 1-line diagrams, fault current calculations, and panel labeling on an hourly basis. Again, no competition (at the time), and well paid.
Look around for an opportunity to become an “expert” on a current topic and the chance to offer a new service with little competition and unrestrained fees.
